Newlyweds were attracted to this early 20th-century Cottage Style home in Concord Massachusetts because it had been so neglected. While there had been some remodeling, the house retained its original form. It was important to them to preserve the historic qualities and accomplish a whole house remodeling to make the house functional for their contemporary, growing family and sustainable to operate and maintain.
The result is a very contemporary feeling historic home with a seamless rear addition. The make-over preserves the original exterior detailing such as shingle siding with weaved corners, exposed rafter tails and open eaves. The new stone clad chimney in the front of the house orders the elevation around the original massing. The windows in the home office above the entry recall the original sleeping porch. The new exterior doors are replicas of the original doors.
